April 2023 - Week 1 Roundup

Asian Elephant

Sighted on: 3.Apr.2023

As mentioned earlier, the giants are back on the banks of the Kabini. This is the best time to observe these magnificent animals. On 3rd April, during the afternoon boat safari, we sighted this majestic bull on the banks of the Kabini. He walked all the way from the tree line towards the river, giving us ample time to admire him.

Grey Headed Fish Eagle

Sighted on: 5.Apr.2023

Winter in Kabini is still ongoing; on the 5th-morning boat safari, the temperature was around 20°C, with the backwaters completely covered with mist. I was hoping for some sighting to engage the guests and was fortunate to find my all-time favourite - the Grey Headed Fish Eagle. This particular individual is nesting and seen very frequently. As the water level is low, they are getting a good number of fish to hunt, and we often encounter him with his prey.

Smooth-coated Otters

Sighted on: 7.Apr.2023

Otters prefer rocky stretches for dens and resting. River stretches with bank-side vegetation and marshes are used in proportion to their availability, especially in summer, as they provide ample cover while travelling or foraging. Open clayey and sandy banks are largely avoided as they lack cover. Smooth-coated otters are social, hunt in groups, are mainly diurnal, and have a short lull in activity during midday. During the 7th April morning boat safari, we saw these beauties in shallow waters with a massive fish that they had caught.
