Sleeping Elephants
Sighted on: 18.July.2023
One of the most common questions I get asked is, 'Do elephants sleep lying down? The answer is a bit complicated. It has been observed that elephants sleep for about 4-6 hours in captivity, whereas in the wild, it is much less. It is estimated that in the wild, they sleep only for 2-3 hours, and that too most of the time standing as they are rarely observed sleeping lying down. On a recent drive, we had the fortune to witness this rare moment of a mother and her sub-adult calf sleeping lying down near a waterhole. For me, it was even better than sighting a tiger.

As mentioned previously, the monsoon is the most challenging time to see the big cats in the jungle. As luck would have it, the boldest and most gorgeous tigress, the Tiger Tank female, gave us a great show during the jeep safari. She has a vast territory in the tourism zone that includes both zones as well as the backwaters.
