Eurasian Spoonbill
Sighted on: 06.May.2024

We saw a Eurasian Spoonbill during the boat safari. They are distinctive, large, wading birds with a spatula-shaped bill from which they get their name. Adult birds have a short crest and a yellowish breast patch. They are commonly found in wetlands with shallow water (including tidal flats), where they feed by sweeping their bill from side to side, looking for crustaceans and small fish.

Wildlife safaris are not for the faint-hearted; they test your patience and can get very frustrating at times. After spending four straight safaris without any significant sightings, I finally got lucky this evening. Along with our guests, I got this majestic tigress at the fag end of the safari. The sighting lasted about two minutes as she walked across the view line and safari track, spray marking a tree, before disappearing into the bushes.
