A safari in Kabini is full of surprises, and today, it was a pleasant one in the form of a tigress - a mother of two cubs. It was at the fag end of the safari when we had been driving for a long time without any significant sightings, and hope was fading faster than the light. Suddenly, as we negotiated another bend in the road, there she was, relaxed and rolling on the grass with her cubs by her side. As soon as the cubs sighted us, they moved closer to the bushes as they were still a little shy. She called to them every now and then to assure them that we posed no threat. Our guests were able to spend a good amount of time watching this beautiful family.

Elephants are excellent swimmers. They swim using their trunks as snorkels. Kabini is known for such sightings. During the afternoon boat safari, I spied a herd of elephants on the Bandipur side and from their body language, I guessed that they would swim across the Kabini to the Nagarhole side. My reading of the situation proved correct, and the herd entered the river and started to swim across. Midway through their swim, a calf got separated from the herd and started rumbling continuously. Upon hearing him, one of the adults swam back to help the calf. Our guests were lucky to witness this beautiful natural history moment.
