Malabar Giant Squirrel
Sighted on: 21.November.2023
During the evening vehicle safari, we spotted the most colourful mammal in the park. A Malabar Giant Squirrel was observed chewing on the bark of a Mathi or ‘crocodile bark’ tree. The Malabar giant squirrel is a large multi-coloured tree squirrel species endemic to forests and woodlands in India. It is active during the day, especially in the early hours of the morning and evening. It spends most, if not all, it’s time on trees. Its primary herbivorous diet includes fruit, flowers, nuts and tree bark.
